The Cathedral Rock Trail is closed until further notice.
The highest point in the James F. Dunbar Memorial Forest, Cathedral Rock is accessed by a moderately difficult one-mile trail. Spectacular views of the northwestern Adirondacks can be seen from the top of the fire tower.
From the parking area behind the Ranger School, turn west and hike up the gated road. Continue for a couple hundred feet to the trail on the right. Pass through the campus forest and cross a few back roads. From here the trail will approach steep cliffs and will wrap around to the top of them. There are steep drop-offs so use caution, especially with young children. The trail will climb several stairs, pass a small pavilion, and come to Tower Road. To reach the fire tower, follow Tower Road.
Ranger School Trailhead: Follow Ranger School Road, off of CR 61, to the left which brings you behind the Ranger School. Take the first left to a large parking area by a field. From the parking area behind Ranger School, locate the gated road; this is the beginning of the trail.
